Janie works from her studio in Oxford throwing, coiling, slab building and drawing. She (mostly) fires in an electric kiln and in a raku kiln.
Janie studied Fine Art Printmaking at Central School of Art, London, in the early 1980’s and started working with clay in the late ‘90’s. Her clay knowledge has been gleaned from key potters she has worked with or known - notably Elizabeth Raeburn and Rodney Lawrence, Christine Constant and most recently Dylan and Jane Bowen. She has worked in ceramics studios in Gateshead, Newcastle, London, Hanoi, Perth (Australia), Singapore and Waiheke Island (New Zealand). Having travelled widely, her work is inspired by the environment around her.
As well as her artistic endeavours, Janie has continued to be an advocate for environmental stewardship and to this end, she is currently working with Good Food Oxfordshire on food systems change, and is the Project Lead for OxFarmToFork, establishing direct sales from local agro-ecological producers into Oxford institutions.
